Koforidua, June 15, GNA - The Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr Alban S. K. Bagbin on Monday warned that his Ministry would take tough measures against people who engaged in activities that sabotage the provision of portable water.
He said those who engage in activities like illegal connections, distribution of fake water bills and other negative activities that undermine the provision of sustainable water in the country would be arrested and prosecuted.
Mr Bagbin gave the warning at a press conference on the Water Sector in the Eastern Region and the way forward in Koforidua. He asked the people to "name and shame people who are sabotaging the system".
The Minister said currently, 59 per cent of rural dwellers in the region have access to portable water, adding the percentage would increase when the Koforidua Water Project is completed to cater for more than 25 communities. More JA
NSOC 15 Social Water Minister 2 Koforidua Mr Bagbin said government was in the process of concluding financial arrangements for the Kwahu Water Project to take off and plans were far advanced for the expansion of the urban water system at Akim Oda, Kibi, Asamankese, Nsawam and other major towns in the region. He said the ATMA Rural Water Project, which was started in 2009 and expected to be completed by mid 2011, is expected to boost water supply to Asuogyaman, Krobo and the Akuapem areas. The Omanhene of New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre Oti Boateng, appealed to investors to take advantage of the improved supply of water and electricity to do business in New Juaben. The Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo expressed regret that the presence of large number of water bodies in the region is not facilitating the supply of the commodity to the people and development efforts. He said the water bodies are also being threatened by the activities of illegal chainsaw operators and miners. Mr Ofosu Ampofo pleaded with the chiefs and people to preserve the water resources and ensure they do not farm close to them. 15 June 10
