Ghanaian President John Evans Atta Mills on Saturday used the May Day celebrations to promise Ghanaian workers that good times await them from July this year because a new salary structure will take effect from that month.
Speaking at the Independence Square in Accra, where thousands of Ghanaian workers including organised labour groups gathered, President Mills said his administration had planned to implement the single spine salary structure, which seeks to enhance the conditions of all government workers in the country, as well as ensure equal pay for equal job done.
He commended Ghanaian workers for their dedication to duty in hard times and appealed to them to continue working for the nation.
President Mills said he was overwhelmed by their turn out at the event and promised that he will follow the steps of first Ghanaian President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who worked tirelessly to build the Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC).
For his part, Mr. Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of the Ghana TUC, thanked President Mills for showing commitment to the implementation of the new salary policy which has been agitated for by workers for a long time.
This year’s May Day was dedicated to Dr. Nkrumah’s 100 years birthday celebration.
