Military investigators arrive at Sikaman to begin probe into military helicopter crash

Military investigators have arrived at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom area of the Ashanti Region to begin investigations into the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In an interview with Channel One TV, and monitored by GhanaWeb on Thursday, August 7, 2025, the Assembly Member for the area, Matthew Baah, confirmed that he would be accompanying the military investigators to the scene.

“I will be accompanying the military investigators to visit the accident site to assist them as they begin their investigations. So far, the residents have complied with the directive not to visit the crash scene,” he stated.

The Ghana Armed Forces helicopter was carrying top government officials and military personnel to Obuasi for a program on illegal mining activities, as part of the government’s intensified efforts to end illegal mining, widely known as galamsey.

Among the victims were two Cabinet Ministers: Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah; and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Others included Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna; former Central Regional Minister and NDC National Vice Chairman, Dr Samuel Sarpong; and former parliamentary candidate, Samuel Aboagye.

Three members of the Ghana Air Force crew also perished in the crash: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The aircraft lost radar contact shortly after takeoff and was later discovered in the Adansi area, according to a statement by the Ghana Armed Forces.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, with investigations currently underway.

President John Dramani Mahama has since declared a three-day national mourning period. All national flags are to be flown at half-mast in honour of the deceased.
