.Kufuor Buys Buses, Mills Sells Them As Scrap!
Report By Dennis A. BOATENG
Less than eight years after the introduction of Metro Mass Transport into the country by the erstwhile J. A Kufuor's led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, the multi-million national investment is in danger as dozens of the buses which are supposed to convey passengers; are now being cut and sold to scrap dealers!
The social intervention programme which was introduced by the New Patriotic Party is now in serious shambles as the best this new Atta Mills led National Democratic Congress government can do to better the programme is to turn grounded buses into scraps when the least it could do to savage the situation is to repair those buses.
A visit to Swedru in the Central Region by this reporter shockingly reveals that the buses are moved from various terminals within the country especially from Accra and Takoradi and brought to a base behind the Metro Mass Transport Terminal at Agona Swedru to be scrapped!
The site is a hide-out inside the premises of Mawuli's Catering Services and five meters from Golden Star FM; a local based radio station at Agona Swedru. The few people had noticed the fatalities being caused to the detriment of our dear nation.
Incidentally, when this reporter went to the site, a truck with the registration number; GR 4162 H had come to collect the cut Metro Mass Buses to Tema as disclosed by sources close to the dealers whilst some other four buses awaited their demolition.
When he spoke to some residents around, they disclosed that the act has been going on for almost a year now. When asked why they haven't reported the operations to the police, what most of them said was that; "If the care takers of the buses are right here so we think what they are doing is legal because they always come here to interact with those cutting the buses into pieces," they said.
When one of the workers of Metro Mass came to the site and was confronted by this reporter to find out if they were aware of the ongoing acts, he responded in a very harsh manner.
"These vehicles are all spoilt and we cannot get their spare parts to buy anywhere. What else do you want us to do? Or we should leave them to rot," he echoed angrily and refused to mention his name.
This happening comes as a surprise to all and sundry who come to the Mawuli Catering Services to eat or have some snacks and watch the scrap dealers with astonishing eyes.
