The chairman of the church of Pentecost, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah has urged “self – proclaimed” prophets to undergo training at the various theological seminaries and colleges in the country to equip them properly for the role of a prophet.

Some “prophets” have received massive backlash from a cross-section of Ghanaians after videos went viral on social media of prophecies pertaining to the death of dancehall artiste Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, known in showbiz as Ebony Reigns.

The situation subsequently led to a debate about the role and relevance of a prophet in everyday life.

But speaking at a press conference on “Prophetism in Ghana”, Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah said merely prophesying does not make one a prophet.

According to him, “a person must have the gift of the word of knowledge, the gift of the word of wisdom, the gift of discerning of spirit and also of interpretation. Without these gifts, somebody cannot be called into the office of a prophet.”

“We are therefore praying that people who are functioning in the spirit will subject themselves to some training. If they humble themselves, God will strengthen their gift, he added”

Apostle Professor Opoku Onyinah also stressed the importance of prophecy as a medium used by God to communicate with people.

“Prophecy is real. Indeed God speaks. Prophecy is to encourage, comfort and exalt people. If someone has been called to be a prophet then the person has the ability to receive revelation from God.”
