Scores of mental patients who thronged the Accra Psychiatric Hospital to seek medical attention have been left stranded.

This follows the decision of the managers of the facilities to suspend new admission due to lack of funds and logistic to cater for patients.

Starr News' Daniel Lartey who visited the hospital reports that the patients look dejected and confused.

He reported that the hospital has also suspended OPD services due to lack of stationery, short supply of food, medication and detergents.

He quoted some nurses of the facility saying their situation is dire and pathetic since they cannot help their suffering patients.

The CEO of the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Akwesi Osei said his outfit is expected to coordinate the operations of the facility, but they are helpless. He accused the government of failing to prioritise mental health care.

"We have been in touch with the Ministry, we are looking at how the issue can be resolved, the truth, however, is that until they get funding, they are frankly not in a position to operate... The authority itself does not have the funding to give them. The funding has to come from the ministry,” he said.
