Workers in Ghana are today joining their counterparts throughout the world to celebrate May Day which is being organized by the Organised Labour Division of the Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC).
Because of a decision taken to rotate the celebration of May Day in the regional capitals, this year’s national celebration would occur at Sunyani the capital of the Brong-Ahafo Region.
The celebration has been dubbed “Elections 2012: The Role of Workers in Securing Peaceful and Fair Election”.
Mr Kwaku Darko Aferi, Head of Public Affairs, in an interview with GNA said both a national committee and local committee had been established to organize this year’s May Day celebrations and it comprised of representatives from all the unions.
He said whereas the executives of the various District Councils of Labour would be expected to be present at the national parade, Greater Accra Region would organize a regional parade for its workers.
Mr Aferi said companies that do not have branches in the Brong-Ahafo Region, are expected to send their representatives to participate in the parade.
He said from April 25 to April 30, some activities had preceded the May Day and they included a symposium, health walk, May Day Quiz and a Radio Discussion.**
