Mason jailed seven years for Defilement

A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced a mason to seven years imprisonment for defiling a 14 year old girl at Anyaa in Accra.

Eric Quarshie, charged with defilement, pleaded guilty and the court convicted him on his own plea.

Quarshie told the court presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong-Adjin Doku that when he met the victim and proposed to her, she told him that she was 16 years old.

Prosecuting Detective Inspector J. B. Asante said the complainant is a 14 year old pupil residing at Anyaa NIC Top in Accra.

Quarshie also resides in the same vicinity.

Prosecution said somewhere in 2013, the victim who was then 12 year old, left her mother’s house for fear of being punished by her mother.

Detective Inspector Asante said the victim embarked on various errands and met the convict who proposed to her. The Victim later moved in to stay with Quarshie.

Prosecution said the victim became pregnant and Quarshie negotiated with the victim’s parents to take care of her and the child.

According to the prosecutor, the victim after giving birth relocated to her mother’s residence.

Quarshie, however, failed to take care of the victim and her baby, and on October 30, this year she reported the matter to the Police.

Prosecution said Quarshie was nabbed and during interrogation admitted he defiled the victim but the victim told him she was 16 year old.
