55-year-old Osmanu Mumuni who chopped off his 10-year-old son's ear for allegedly stealing his GH¢250 has been sentenced to 2 years imprisonment.

This was made known by Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Afia Tenge, after the Weija Circuit Court charged the culprit with two counts; use of offensive weapon and causing harm which was contrary to sections 70 and 69 of the Criminal Offenses Act 1960, (ACT 29).

The case presided over by Judge H/H Bernard Bentil convicted the accused person after pleading guilty to both counts.

“The judge prior to passing the sentence stated that the accused is a first offender and that, he has shown remorse which he felt through his demeanor. He further stated that, he wanted the punishment to serve as a deterrent to others,” DSP Afia Tenge said.

Meanwhile, arrangements have been made for the accused to be transported to Ankaful Prison I to serve his jail term.

Osmanu Mumuni was arrested on May 17, 2020 by the Weija Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for cutting off part of his son’s ear with a blade after the victim's mother reported the case to the police.

The victim had been living with his father at Obuom-Domeabra, near Weija, since his parents divorced.

His son was taken to the Amanfrom Polyclinic near Weija to receive medical attention.
