Man jailed for assaulting sister

Tema, May 22, GNA -A twenty-six-old employee of Tema Steel Works Company, was on Monday sentenced to two years' imprisonment by the Tema Circuit Court 'B' for assaulting his sister. Isaac Asamaoh pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge saying that the victim had been disrespectful towards him but the court found him guilty of the offence.

The facts of the case as presented by Police Chief Inspector Evelyn Susuawu were that on May 16 this year, at about 10:30 pm, the sister, Esther Agyapong, a student, and her other elder brother were fetching water when the convict asked the victim for water to wash his hands which she complied. Chief Inspector Susuawu said Asamoah later asked Agyapong to give him her mobile phone, but she replied that it belonged to one Andrew. The convict became offended and said the victim had disobeyed him and that she should wait and see what would happen to her. According to the Prosecutor, Asamoah went into his room and brought a bread knife, and with it, he cut the right hand of her sister. When she complained, Asamoah further cut her left hand with the knife and beat her with a ceiling brush.

Chief Inspector Susuawu said when the said Andrew wanted to intervene, Asamoah cut him with the knife and he left the scene. When Andrew later came back with the Police Patrol team, Asamoah had already absconded, said the prosecution. Chief Inspector Susuawu said Agyapong was immediately rushed to the Tema General Hospital, and a medical report on her later revealed that she had been assaulted. The prosecution said a complaint lodged with the Police later led to the arrest of the convict for interrogation.
