Man in court for Bigamy

A 40-year- old Gardener, Roland Osebre Yawson has been put before an Accra Circuit Court charged with bigamy.

Yawson’s new wife, Esther Quansah, who was in the dock with him, is being held on the charge of marriage with a person previously married.

Yawson and Esther have pleaded not guilty and the court had admitted them to a bail of GH? 6,000.00 with two sureties each.

The court presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman Budu after listening to the defence counsel of the accused persons, referred parties to go for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).

It therefore directed them to the court’s Registrar for the ADR processes.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah said the complainant Jane Osebre Yawson is legally married to Roland under the marriage Ordinance Cap 127.

ASP Acquah said Roland and Jane are blessed with two kids. Currently, the complainant resides at Ashalley Botwe while Roland lives at Tesano, all in Accra.

Prosecution said early this year, Roland went with some family members to contract a customary marriage with Esther, a 30 -year- old nurse at Aburi in the Eastern Region.

After the marriage, prosecution said Esther joined Roland as his new wife. Later the complainant had information that Roland had contracted a new marriage and they were living together.

The complainant reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit and Roland and Esther were arrested.

During investigations, ASP Acquah said it came to light that Roland and Esther started dating since 2011 while Esther knew that Roland was legally married to the complainant, yet went ahead to marry him.
