Man commits suicide over joblessness

Bazua (U/E), July 24, GNA - A 34 year-old man who could not withstand the continued insults by family members due to his joblessness, committed suicide on Tuesday at Bazua, near Bawku. Braimah Akologo was alleged to have used a double-barrelled gun owned by his father to commit the act.

Adamu Ndego, a family member, who briefed the Ghana News Agency, said Braimah upon completion of his basic education in 1990 left for Kumasi in search of a job in spite of family members' protestations. He said Braimah was asked to stay at home to help in farming so that part of the proceeds could be used to help him further his education at the secondary level.

Mr Ndego explained that after a fruitless search, Braimah settled for a menial job, which he did for more than ten years. According to him, when Braimah returned and asked for sponsorship into the secondary school, the family turned down his request saying he was over 27 years and was rather advised to take up farming to support himself.

Mr Ndego said this advice was rejected by Braimah and had since preferred to stay at home doing nothing. This, however, led to unrest between Braimah and some family members who constantly insulted him over his joblessness.

"Due to this, he always threatened to end his life anytime he was abused by a family member" Mr. Ndego intimated. He said on Tuesday whilst they were on the farm, Braimah took advantage of family members' absence and sneaked into the father's room to pick the gun.

He shot himself in the abdomen, causing his intestines to gush out. Mr Ndego said neighbours who heard the gunshot rushed to the scene and found Braimah in a pool of blood. 24 July 07
