Man arrested for assaulting wife in viral video

A middle-aged man who was recently caught in a viral video physically assaulting a woman reported to be his wife has been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

According to the police, the suspect, who has been identified as John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested at his residence at Ofankor in the Ga East Municipality by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on November 17, 2025.

In a statement confirming the arrest dated Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the police said, “The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested a man captured in a viral Facebook video physically assaulting a woman believed to be his wife at their residence at Ofankor in the Ga East Municipality.

“The suspect, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, was arrested on Monday, November 17th 2025, at the family residence.”

The police, through its Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, also disclosed that two other individuals were arrested.

They explained that the two, who are siblings of John Odartey Lamptey, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, attempted to attack a tenant who lives at the residence on the suspicion that the said tenant had recorded the assault and posted it on social media, leading to their brother’s arrest.

The police added that the tenant has, however, been rescued and is being protected.

“Following his arrest, two of his siblings, Grace Kushie Lamptey and Louis Odartey Lamptey, who attempted to attack a female tenant they suspected of recording and circulating the video, were also arrested, and the tenant was rescued to ensure her safety,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the police said the main victim, is yet to be located, as her whereabouts are unknown.

They added that she fled the scene before the arrival of the police.

“Efforts are underway to locate and ensure the safety of the wife who had fled the scene before the Police arrived. The Ghana Police Service remains committed to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that perpetrators face the full rigour of the law,” it concluded.

The man was seen in a video mercilessly beating his half-naked wife with a stick in the compound of their house, a development that has since sparked massive outrage on social media.

She was heard in the video crying, and at some points, she knelt in an attempt to plead with the man.

Her pleas, however, fell on deaf ears as he continued to strike her with the stick amid her screams.
