... Millions of Ghanaians cannot afford one square meal a day
Winneba (C/R), Aug. 25, GNA- The African Methodist Episcopl Zion Church has added its voice to the call on the Government to redefine its economic policies to make life a bit bearable for Ghanaians.

Earlier in the week, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana made a similar call asking the Government to immediately readjust the economic policies of the country to make living worthwhile for the people, particularly the poor.

Right Reverend Dr Godfred Zormelo, Senior Bishop's Deputy of the A.M.E. Zion Church, made the call at the opening the 98th session of the West Ghana Conference of the Church at Winneba on Wednesday. The Five-Day Conference under the Theme, "Making The Impossible Possible With God - Demonstrating Our Faith", is being attended by delegates from the Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern, Central and the Western Regions.

Rt. Rev. Dr Zormelo said that the current economic hardships facing the nation has made life extremely unbearable for the citizenry, especially people under the lower income bracket and those confronted with abject poverty.

He said that at the moment, there are millions of Ghanaians who cannot afford even one square meal a day, adding that this is the time Government should try as much as possible to translate the improvement of the economy as indicated on paper to the pockets of the people to enable them to enjoy the benefits of the economy.

The Senior Bishop's Deputy also called on the National Media Commission and other relevant bodies to ensure that the country's air waves were not used to disintegrate the society through phone-in programmes that tended to mar the beauty of democracy.

He drew the attention of Ghanaians politicians of the need to sustain the peace and stability the nation had enjoyed for about 20 years now as well as the quest for the establishment of industries to create jobs for the millions of unemployed citizens.

In his opening address Right Reverend Kenneth Monroe, Presiding Bishop of the Western West Africa Episcopal Zion Church, charged Christians to use their faith in God as a driving force to win the spiritual and moral battles confronting the church and the nation and push their development programmes forward.

Rt. Rev. Dr Monroe said it was only when Christians maintained a strong faith in God in the face of all odds, that their wishes would be fulfilled by God through Christ Jesus.

He commended members of the Ghana branch of the church for their hard work and advised that they should intensify their evangelisation to win more souls for Christ.

Mr Thomas Yallow, President of the Lay Council and Treasurer of the Conference appealed to Rt. Rev. Dr Monroe to help the Ghana branch to gain its autonomy which succeeding leaders of the Western West Africa Episcopal had failed to accomplish.

Mr Yallow recalled several promises made by the past Episcopal heads, which were not fulfilled and expressed the hope that Rt. Rev. Dr Monroe would do all in his power to bring this to reality during his tenure of office. Aug. 25 05
