Make a 'dignified retreat'; we don’t need this ‘needless’ tussle – MP to KNUST Authorities

The Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annor Dompreh has asked authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to rescind its decision to change Kantanga hall into a mix one.

The management of KNUST on Wednesday, August 15, 2018, announced that, with effect from the 2018/19 academic year, all six halls of residence of the University would be converted into mixed halls.

The school had earlier converted the two all-male halls; University and Unity Halls to mixed halls; a move which was strongly opposed.

However in a latest event, the school authorities have decided to change all six halls into mixed ones.

The management said the decision is “in line with the university’s policy of periodic review of residential accommodation for students.”

The MP, who was once a student leader, speaking to the issue during a panel discussion on Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo', Monday, questioned the level of consultation that went into its current decision; adding “the court of public opinion is clearly against it” apart from that “they are arguing from a very weak point of view”.

"I would want to ask the university authorities to make a dignified retreat… The tradition in some of these halls is not a bad thing. It brings out a certain consciousness in you…and so I will plead with them. You have taught us to resist the oppressor's rule.

It doesn’t matter their position, they have to make a dignified retreat. Already we are struggling as a nation; there are a lot of things we have to deal with; they should not bring in any fight which is needless. Let’s maintain the tradition," he stated.
