Majority Leader’s rationale behind KIA renaming 'divisive' – Atwima Mponua MP

Kofi Amankwa Manu is Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua

Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, Kofi Amankwa Manu, has strongly criticised Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, for comments suggesting that the renaming of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) was intended to honour the Ga people.

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Manu described Ayariga’s remarks as divisive and a clear example of tribal politics.

“We often hear phrases like ‘Ga land is for Gas,’ ‘Ashanti land is for Ashantis,’ and ‘Fanti land is for Fantis,’” Manu said. “But this is Ghana, and it belongs to every tribe. We must stop those tribal politics,” he said.

Manu further warned that such utterances could undermine national unity, adding that Ayariga’s statement was a political misstep.

“This is Ghana, not a one-tribe nation. Are we going to rename the Baba Yara Sports Stadium simply because it is in the Ashanti Region? That would be absurd.

“For this one, he goofed, and it is so wrong. We must refrain from saying this land belongs to this tribe, so we need to change things. It won’t help anybody,” Manu said.
