Chairman Akwasi Anti Asamoah, a former Fomena Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the party’s leadership to retain Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2028 general elections.
According to Akwasi Anti Asamoah, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, despite several unsuccessful attempts at the presidency, consistently maintained Dr Bawumia as his running mate.
He noted that their persistence eventually paid off, leading to electoral victory. He believes the same strategy should be applied by maintaining Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, as Bawumia’s running mate.
Speaking in an interview on Angel TV, which has since been shared on social media, Anti Asamoah said every individual has flaws but Dr Opoku Prempeh has acknowledged his shortcomings and worked on them. He therefore described him as the best candidate to partner Dr Bawumia in the next election.
“Bawumia cannot change NAPO because he is the right candidate. Akufo-Addo contested with him as running mate three times, and they eventually won. Now Bawumia has also been marketed and is going again, so NAPO is the best candidate to run with him,” he said.

He added that the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections was due to voter anger and not the fault of Dr Opoku Prempeh.
“The party suffered defeat because of anger, and it is not NAPO’s fault that we lost the election. He is the best person to partner Bawumia for the presidency,” he stressed.
Dr Bawumia partnered Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh in the 2024 general elections but lost to President John Dramani Mahama and his vice president, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Dr Bawumia has since been elected again to lead the NPP and is yet to name his running mate for the upcoming election.
