Mahama: Use social media to tell the African story

President John Mahama has encouraged Africans to trumpet the successes of the continent to the rest of the world because no one can say it better.

Delivering the honorary keynote address at the Oxford-Africa Conference in the UK Friday, Mahama said the world is now a global village hence Africans must take advantage of technology to advertise “the victories” chalked by a region mostly described as the ‘dark continent.’

Speaking on the topic: “A Continent on the Move: People, Politics and Business Across Borders", Mahama said: “We must tell our own story of the Africa we know.”

Citing the creative industry as an example, he said Nigeria can boast of one of the best movie industries in the world and the world needs to know such story.

According to him, it is no mean achievement for Nigeria’s movie industry popularly known as ‘Nollywood’ to place third as the most lucrative industry globally.

Mahama therefore called on Africans to resort to social media to project the positive image of Africa.

“The world is literally at our finger tips... We must continue to take to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter. We must share, ping or blog our victory,” Mahama noted.

The Oxford Africa Conference is a unique blend of business and society intended for individuals and institutions looking for unparalleled depth and insight into Africa’s transformation.

Top speakers will discuss the inherent complexities in access to finance, and the effect on the continent’s evolution, while the discussion on social entrepreneurship will profile major trends and obstacles affecting innovation.
