MPs, Speaker under pressure to declare assets

Speaker of Parliament and Members of the legislature are under pressure by the Ghana Integrity Initiative to declare their assets according the assets declaration ACT 550 of 1998.

Last week, the group made a similar call on the President and his appointees to declare their assets as prescribed by the constitution.

Vitus Azeem, Executive Director of GII, told RadioXYZ the Auditor-General must take up the challenge to publish on a monthly basis the names and assets declared by public officers since they are custodians of declared assets.

“From the past we have seen that either people do not declare or don’t declare on time as prescribed by the constitution.

“So we think that, these are all people who have sworn to serve this country so we are just telling them that this is one of the basic requirements of a public official in their position”, Vitus Azeem said.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative is an anti-corruption agency which checks on how government spends public funds amongst others.
