Mrs Freda Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Tano North Constituency, in Brong-Ahafo has called for international support to sustain the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
She observed that the NHIS was on the verge of collapse, and appealed to corporate bodies and development partners to support the National Health Insurance Authority to pay its outstanding claims.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, Mrs Prempeh noted that a study had shown that many private hospitals and clinics in the country, including mission ones failed to provide healthcare to registered clients of the NHIS.
This unpleasant situation, she said, had brought economic pressure on some MPs, as they had to pay the medical bills of some of their constituents.
Mrs Prempeh observed that many Ghanaians died needlessly because of the poor and expensive access to quality healthcare in the country.
She said the cash and carry system was gradually re-surfacing in the health sector and that majority of Ghanaians would suffer.
