The Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has expressed strong opposition to the government’s reported decision to convert the proposed National Cathedral into a National Cultural Convention Centre.
In a post on his Facebook page on July 6, 2025, the MP questioned the commitment of Christians to their faith and urged them to speak out against the move.
“As a Christian, you should be worried that this government wants to convert the proposed National Cathedral into a National Cultural Convention Centre. Where lies your faith and love for the gospel? Don’t just sit unconcerned. Speak up now with courage,” he said.
The National Cathedral project, which was announced in 2018, has faced controversy over its cost and purpose.
Although the government has not officially confirmed a change in the project’s status, speculation about repurposing the site has intensified in recent weeks amid economic challenges and growing calls to prioritise infrastructure and social services.
Kennedy Osei, a vocal advocate for maintaining the original purpose of the project, believes any change would be a betrayal of the Christian vision behind it.
