MP Cautions Contractors

THE MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for Nkawkaw, Hon. Kwabena Adusa Okerchiri, has urged contractors working on a number of projects at Nkawkaw and other towns in the Kwahu area to work to specification in the contract documents and also use quality materials, to ensure longer life span of such projects for the benefit of the people.

The MP said many communities in the country are lagging behind in development due to contractors who fail to adhere to contract specifications, and also use inferior materials for the contracts awarded them.

He said most of such contracts had to be re-awarded to new contractors at additional cost to the government.

Okerchiri made the observation when he inspected work on the new Nkawkaw lorry park which is under construction.

The ?3.2 billion contract is being undertaken by Jasoung Construction Ltd.

He commended the contractor for the good and expert work he has so far done and expressed the hope that he will continue the good job till the project is completed.

He also praised the contractor for employing people in the area to work on the site and said this has brought employment to many people in the area.

He urged other contractors to emulate Jasoung.

The Managing Director of the company, Mr. John Apati Sanyoun, assured the MP that he would work to specification and also use materials required for the job so that what is done will last many years.

He said they encountered problems initially, saying "the drawings for the project were not adequate for a good job since the site was waterlogged and needed additional work such as the construction of drainage systems to check two streams at the site from overflowing during rainy seasons and many jobs which were not specified in the contract documents."

The contractor said, to ensure an excellent job, he immediately contacted the consultants of the project about his findings and they decided to produce a new set of drawings on the project to address all the concerns raised.

According to him, the consultants had made available the new drainage, and wok on the site has resumed steadily. He hoped to complete the job on schedule.

He commended the residents of Nkawkaw, especially the motorists plying the Nkawkaw-Accra road, for their co-operation and hoped that this co-operation will continue to enable him complete the job on time.

Accompanying the MP were Dr. William Boakye Akoto, MP for Birim North, Messrs Kwame Owusu, kwasi Asante and Appiah Ansong, who are all executives of the Nkawkaw constituency branch of NPP as well as many other supporters of the party.
