Luck eludes robber in attempted cabby snatching

Richard Onana, 22, native of Likpe-Bala has been remanded into prison custody by a Hohoe Magistrates’ court for attempting to snatch a Taxi at gun point, at the outskirts of Hohoe.

Onana would return to court on May 23. His plea and statement was not pronounced in the court presided over by Mr Stanislaus Amanoipo.

Mr Otumi Kartey, Hohoe Municipal Crime Officer briefing the Ghana News Agency, over the weekend, said Onana engaged the services of the cabby to convey his blind mother from the bungalow area to a crusade grounds of the Charismatic Evangelistic Ministry, at the E. P. School’s Park, in Hohoe.

He said the suspect led the cabby driver to veer off the main road into a bush with occasional reassurances that they were almost at their destination until he pulled a locally manufactured pistol and ordered the driver to surrender the keys to the vehicle or be shot.

Mr Kartey said luck eluded Onana in his attempt to load the pistol as the driver bolted and sought refuge at a Church in session within the neigbourhood.

The Crime Officer said the driver informed the Pastor and some members of the church of his ordeal, and they quickly rushed to the scene. He said when Onana saw the church members approaching; he fled but was pursued and arrested in the bush.

He was brought to the Police station, and with the help of the Police the locally manufactured pistol and a cartridge he abandoned was retrieved from the crime scene.
