Low voter turnout and violence at run-off

The general voter turnout for the presidential run-off is abysmally low as compared to the situation on December 7.

NCS's visit to some of the polling stations in Accra confirms the situation. Unlike in the December 7 general elections where voters queued up for hours to cast their ballot, the run-off has witnessed a rather low turnout.

Some members of the public told NCS that the zeal Ghanaians attached to the first round is completely lost in this run-off. The regions have also recorded low turnouts and they attribute it to the fact that the parliamentary candidates who the people know very well and close to are not taking part in the re-run.

If the turnout in the first round is said to be low, then the situation as at now could best be described as disappointing.

Meanwhile, there are reports of violence and intimidation in parts of the capital, Accra and some parts o the region. One New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Hon. Kwamena Bartels has reported been beaten by some men uniform. Two other persons believed to be office attendants of the opposition NPP are also reported to have been short one in the arm and the other in the thigh.
