The death of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, has been confirmed by some members of the party following reports of his passing on Monday, July 7, 2025.

The MP’s sudden death has come as a shock to many, as there had been no reports of him being ill or involved in any form of accident.

In fact, just days before his passing, the MP was engaged in several media appearances.

A viral video shows the MP in an interview on Adom TV, recorded as recently as Friday, July 4, 2025.

In the video, the MP is heard criticising the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the re-run of the parliamentary election in some polling stations in the Ablekuma South Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

Citing the legal battle he endured over his legitimacy to represent the people of Akwatia, Ernest Kumi insisted that the NPP could take all the seats in Parliament if it so desired.

“What is wrong? Why are we conceding to this? Must the NDC necessarily win all the seats in Parliament?”

“If the NPP would listen to me, if it were up to me, just as we did in 1992, we should leave all the seats for them; all of us should vacate Parliament and let them take every seat,” he said.

He added, “Look at what they are doing to the rest of us. Look at the fight I have fought to get here. Look at what they are putting these women through. A boycott could have even been better.”
