Local Government Workers Union holds workshop

Accra, Sept.19, GNA - The Local Government Workers Union (LGWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Friday held a workshop to enable the union to reposition itself in its work with the government to ensure that the decentralization programme succeeds. Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, Deputy Secretary-General of the TUC, said for the Local government Service to take off progressively, there was the need for union members to be equipped in order to make meaningful contributions to the service. He also told the officers drawn from the regions to provide good leadership to ensure a strong foundation for the union adding that, weak leadership brought about weak organizational structures. Dr Baah called for planning and capacity building to be able to face challenges ahead. Mr Joe Buahene, General Secretary of the IGWU called for the co-operation of the officers to build a strong and united union. Mr Samuel Kangah, former General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of the TUC, called on the Industrial Relations Officers of the union to commit themselves to the task ahead so that the union would be counted as one of the strong forces geared towards ensuring the success of the service. Dr Stephen Abagrey, National Chairman of LGWU chaired the workshop.
