A Deputy Minister for Local Government, Nana Adjei Boateng, has revealed the roadmap for the election of Municipal, Metropolitan and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in 2021.

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, in April indicated that the election of municipal, metropolitan and district chief executives (MMDCEs) will come off in 2021.

She said this when she shared a tentative timetable of the activities of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) towards the election of MMDCEs at a round-table discussion organized by the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) and the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC).

Speaking with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim on Atinka AM Drive, Nana Adjei Boateng, mentioned that the Ministry has started regional tours to interact with opinion leaders to sensitize and engage Ghanaians on the issue.

He added that the Attorney General’s Department will draft the Bill that will be forwarded to Cabinet and then to Parliament.

“ The Bill will be gazetted for six months before the referendum takes place sometime next year, during the district assembly elections,” he added

According to him, the process will pave way for the necessary constitutional changes in 2020, which will climax the election in 2021.
