Load shedding worsens as gas supply from Nigeria reduces

Gas supply from Nigeria has reduced to 45 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) from an anticipated 120 mmscf, worsening Ghana's energy situation, TV3 gathers.

A close source told TV3’s Sandra Amarquaye on Monday, October 13 that Nigeria is struggling to meet the contractual agreements to supply gas through the West African Gas Pipelines.

A recent strike action by oil field workers in Nigeria’s Itoki region adversely affected Ghana’s energy reserve margin.

Though gas supply rose after the strike action was called off, it has since reduced, the source said.

This situation seems to have taken a toll on the ongoing power rationing exercise as most of the country’s thermal plants are undergoing maintenance works.

That is compounded by the bad inflows of the two of the country’s hydro-electric dams at Bui and Akosombo.

The total energy deficit recorded as of Monday was 480 megawatts (MW).

Already, some consumers have complained about Electricity Company of Ghana’s inconsistency over its load shedding schedule.
