Lions Club: Bawumia inaugurates District 418

The Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Thursday, 2 May 2019 inauguration an independent District of the International Association of Lion Clubs for Ghana, District 418, and witnessed the installation of the first District Governor for Ghana, Lion Dr Kwaku Mensa-Bonsu, in Accra.

Dr Bawumia said for over 100 years the Lions have demonstrated, by their engagements at the community level, their commitment to extending peace and love to those who most need it, and commended the complementary role the Lions and Leos have played with the government in the provision of succour to the poor and underprivileged.

Dr Bawumia also announced that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has directed that all persons afflicted by leprosy should be placed on the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to provide them with some relief as they battle the effects of the disease.

He noted that “the government appreciates the role played by such organisations as we seek to meet the needs of the ordinary Ghanaian, and we will continue to work with them in the foreseeable future.”

Lions Clubs International (LCI) is an international non-political service organization established originally in 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, by Melvin Jones. It is now headquartered in Oak Brook, Illinois. As of April 2015, it had over 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.7 million members (Lions & LEO) in 190 countries around the world.

The focus of Lions Clubs is to raise money for worthy causes. Some of the money raised for a club’s charity account goes toward projects that benefit the local community of an individual club.
