Let’s not show togetherness only at funerals – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has advocated for a continuation of solidarity and show of political tolerance among his colleagues and political opponents as observed at the funeral of mother of Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central constituency Isaac Adongo.

Photos of the Former President and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia with his fierce critic Hon. Isaac Adongo sharing blissful pleasantries emerged on social media over the weekend sparking commendations over the show of political maturity and tolerance among the opposing political actors.

In a short address at the funeral, Former President John Dramani Mahama underscored the need for such acts of unity and brotherliness to be shown at all times and not only in times of grief or adversity, especially as Ghana enters into an election year.

“It is an action of very much significance considering the politics that we play in this nation. It means that in a time of grief, a time of adversity and a time of difficulty all of us must rally around. It is difficult to take away the sadness and the sorrow but the solidarity and the presence of people at an event like this help to comfort the bereaved family and that is why all of us have come here” the Former President said.

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama further admonished the need for campaigns to be free of insults so as to protect the sanctity and peace of election 2020 adding that “It is my hope that this togetherness that we have exhibited will carry on not only at unpleasant occasions like funerals and deaths but in our day to day lives and even in our politics. The politics of decency should prevail rather than insults and violence. As we enter an election year next year, it is my hope that this spirit of solidarity that we have shown here will replicate itself in the course of the year before, during and after the elections”.
