Lebanese women award scholarships to university student

The Lebanese Women Association (LWA) on Tuesday awarded scholarships worth 41.8 million cedis to five students of the University of Ghana.

The students were Ms Gladys Asare-Kumi, a political science student, Gideon Agbley, Ms. Ernestina K. Tetteh and Sarah Duncan, all social work students.

They were each awarded 6 million cedis for 3 years, while Mr Abass Mohammed had 23.8 million cedis for his two-year masters degree in Political Science.

Mrs Hiyam Ghanem, President of LAW, said the association's gesture was in line with its aim to assist to alleviate the plight of brilliant but needy students. "The scholarships are being provided to deserving students, who would be able to contribute in a meaningful way towards national development", she said.

Mrs Ghanem said LAW would monitor their progress closely and asked them to live up to expectation.

Professor Ivan Addae Mensah, Vice chancellor of the University of Ghana, said the under graduates would receive 1.5 million cedis per annum for four years.

For the Masters Degree, he said, the recipient would receive a stipend of 100 dollars for the duration of his course while the rest of the money would go into his research and thesis.

Professor Mike Oquaye, Head, Political Science Department, expressed appreciation to the association and said the selection was done on merit.

"We pray that other foreign groups would do all they can to assist us, indeed there is a great need on our campuses."
