Lazy, undisciplined teachers to face sanctions

Zabzugu (N/R), April 17, GNA - The Ghana Education Service (GES) would institute punitive sanctions against teachers who are habitually late to school and frequently absent from school.

The measures will also affect teachers who fail to write their lesson notes, and perpetual drunkards or those who sexually harass their pupils.

Among the punitive measures are the deletion of names of offending teachers from the payroll, non-payment of salaries not worked for, the suspension of promotions, demotions and disciplinary transfers. Nana Yaw Kyei-Baffour, Zabzugu/Tatale district director of education gave the warning at a durbar organised by the District Directorate of Education at Zabzugu on Monday to brief the teachers on the sanctions to those who do not live up to expectation.

He expressed concern about the increasing indiscipline in the teaching profession in the district.

Alhaji Yakubu Bukari, Zabzugu/Tatale District Chief Executive warned that the District Assembly would not intervene on behalf of any teacher who would misconduct himself or herself.

On the issue of shortage of teachers in the district, the DCE gave the assurance that the GES in collaboration with the District Assembly was negotiating with some organisations to support the district with about 100 volunteer teachers.

Mr Victor Kwame Nkansah, Assistant Director of Education in charge of supervision, advised head teachers in the district to organize regular quiz competitions among their schools to groom their pupils to perform well in quiz programmes to be organised soon in Tamale, which will be sponsored by "Radio Savannah", the GBC "FM" radio station in the Metropolis.
