Lawyer calls for ratification of UN Convention.

Kumasi, Jan. 23, GNA - Dr. Ibrahim Bashiru Koray, a legal practitioner, has said there was a need for a speedy ratification of UN conventions on the Rights of the Disabled.

This would promote, protect and ensure full equal enjoyment of fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities. Dr. Koray said this at the opening of a two-day workshop organised by the Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) and civil society organisations on the UN Convention on the Rights of PWDs, in Kumasi on Thursday.

Participants were drawn mainly from Brong-Ahafo and Ashanti regions and the workshop was aimed at educating PWDs on their rights so that they would not be discriminated against.

Dr. Koray said "The State must facilitate access to white canes, wheel chairs and other facilities that facilitate easy movement of the disabled in the society."

Madam Rita Kyeremaa Kusi, Executive Director for GFD, said GFD would continue to promote the rights of persons with disabilities.
