A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced a 23-year-old labourer to 288 months in prison for robbery, rape and causing physical harm to his victim. Johnson Duah, pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced on his own plea.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Felix Akowuah, told the Court presided over by Mrs Mary Nsenkyire that the victim was an assistant administrator of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), who lived at Kokoso new site in the Kumasi Metropolis.
He said on March 18, this year at about 2:10 am, Duah armed with an axe and machetes, broke into the residence of the complainant, subjected her to severe beatings, inflicted cutlass wounds and raped her.
ASP Akowuah said the convict further took away one Toshiba Laptop valued at GHC 1,800.00, three Infinix cellphones, valued at GHC 370.00 each and several other valuable items.
He said the convict not satisfied, ordered the victim to give him money, but when she was unable to get him any money, he dragged her on the floor and inflicted wounds on her.
ASP Akowuah said when the victim became very weak and unable to control herself, the convict raped and left her to her fate. He said the complainant was admitted to hospital after the ordeal.
The prosecutor said the complainant who had taken full notice of her attacker managed to identify him when she saw him in the community after her discharge from the hospital.
A complaint was made to the police who arrested him and after interrogation the convict was charged.
