The La General Hospital has been in a deteriorating state for some time, causing fear and panic among patients and staff of the hospital.

The Ministry of Health and the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate have therefore given a directive that the hospital be closed down for a facilitate.

The closure which took effect last Sunday, March 2, 2020 will see the hospital getting an ultra-modern Out Patients Department (OPD), luxurious emergency units and a public health department after completion.

The reconstruction, funded by the government is approximated to a cost of $63 million and is expected to be completed within the next 24 months.

The La Hospital is also expected to have a surgical ward unit with four well-equipped theatres and a maternity ward as well as in patients ward for both male and female.

There would be an additional construction of a medical and surgical ward units which include a children’s ward with a luxurious physiotherapy department.

Staff members of the La General Hospital have been temporary transferred to other hospitals and would be called back after the building is fully established.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Elorm Ametepe said, “although the hospital has closed down, the ministry would take over the facility officially on March 15, this year for rehabilitation works to commence.”

Some residents find the closure worrying and gruesome.

‘’It’s not easy going to Korle-Bu for treatment because of the large number of people who go there and so La General Hospital has always been very convenient for me,” Adoley Addo, a trader said.

Amerley Agoe, another resident added that the demolition of the morgue will trigger the release of rats and other rodents into their homes and therefore asked that the municipal authority spray the site of the morgue and its surroundings before demolishing it.

A taxi driver, Nii Osah Mensah, who has also worked at the hospital for years, revealed how work was going to be difficult.
