The UN General Assembly is marking the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

President John Dramani Mahama has been a central figure in this initiative, advocating for the international community to formally acknowledge the full horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and to demand reparations for the victims.

Delivering a statement at the plenary to mark the Day, President Mahama stressed the need for truth, remembrance, and collective action.

“Today marks the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade,” he said, noting that the occasion honours “the approximately 13 million African men, women and children who were enslaved over the course of several centuries."

The UN General Assembly is due to vote on a resolution that would designate the transatlantic African slave trade as "the gravest crime against humanity," a move that supporters describe as both historic and essential to global healing.
