The Information Ministry is holding the maiden edition of the Constitution day lecture to mark Ghana's return to constitutional rule in 1993 at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.

And the keynote speaker is Philip Ebow Bondzi-Simpson, the rector of GIMPA.

The maiden edition of the lecture promises to be educative and insightful particularly with regards to addressing the fallouts from scraping off both the Republic and AU holidays and their subsequent replacement with the Constitution Day and Founders Day.

The lecture has been headlined under the theme; “Constitutionalism in Ghana’s Fourth Republic: Towards Functional Performance”, which according to the Ministry is targeted at acknowledging the country’s tenets of democracy, rule of law and principles of constitutionalism.

In a statement released by the Ministry, it wrote, the day is “set aside to acknowledge the country’s collective efforts.”

The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, on December 13 laid a bill before Parliament to amend the Public Holidays Act to include January 7 and August 4 as statutory public holidays.

January 7 which is to be celebrated as Constitution Day, is to replace the July 1 Republic Day celebration while August 4 will be Founders Day; a replacement of the September 21 Founder’s Day.

Government explained it made January 7 a Constitution Day because it was the day the 1992 Constitution came into effect under the Fourth Republic in 1993.
