LIVESTREAMED: Big Issue on Citi TV

Up for discussion for this week’s edition of Citi TV’s Big Issue is the debate over the Electoral Commission’s proposal for a new Voters Register.

Some Ghanaians, including the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on the EC to abrogate its plans to compile a new register for the December elections.

The Managing Editor of the Daily Insight newspaper, Mr Kwesi Pratt said at a forum that Ghanaians will reject the results of the general elections in December if any individual or political party uses any hanky-panky means to win power.

The coalition of political parties in support of a new electoral roll on the other hand, has entreated the Electoral Commission to engage those opposed to it in an atmosphere of “openness and sincerity.”

The Coalition at a news conference Thursday, also urged the Commission to demonstrate that it is capable of putting together a new Biometric Voter Management System (BVMS) and also to compile a new voters’ register ahead of the 2020 general elections.

The uproar surrounding the distribution of ambulances is still ongoing with the NDC alleging that the government wants to distribute them when the election is near so they use it as a campaign message.

President Akufo-Addo at a meeting with the press in December 2019, assured that the ambulances will be distributed on January 6 but the day passed without the distribution.

This was after the Health Minister appealed for the distribution to be postponed after the CEO of the National Ambulance Service said number of things are not in place yet.

Also up for discussion is the confusion the Ghana Premier League’s return seems to be causing.

When the return of the league was announced, most Ghanaians were hoping for a fresh start. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has also undergone its own bout of rebranding.

GFA President Kurt Okraku and his ‘fresh’ executives have already started on a positive note. Regardless of the actual results on the field, their #BringBackTheLove campaign has been a relative success, become the reference phrase for all things football in Ghana.

However, all that goodwill threatens to be blown apart as the FA, GBC and StarTimes tussle over the TV rights to the fledgeling Ghana Premier League season.
