The Kwahu Traditional Council has donated GH₵200,000 towards the reconstruction of the Kantamanto Market, which was recently razed down by a fire.

Led by the Adontenghene of the Kwahu Traditional Area, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, a delegation of chiefs from the council on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, made the donation on behalf of the Kwahuhene, Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng II, to aid the ongoing reconstruction of the market.

Explaining the motivation behind the donation, Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III said the chiefs felt compelled to come to the aid of the victims, which included several natives of Kwahu.

"I bring you greetings from the chiefs of Kwahu, led by Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng II. We recently became aware of the disaster that befell our people dealing in used clothing in this market, an occurrence which has become frequent. We know that a lot of people from Kwahu make up the total number of people engaged in trading in this market, and so any such disaster really comes to us as sad news. That is the basis why Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng II, through his leadership, has sent us to bring you our little contribution to support our people," he stated.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the victims, Aikins Boakye Mensah, Executive Member of the Kantamanto Interim Disaster Management Committee, expressed gratitude to the Kwahu Traditional Council for their generosity.

He assured that the donation would be put to good use, indicating that plans are being put in place to ensure that security is tightened in the market to prevent future disasters.

"We have finished constructing the sheds and roofing them. All that is left now is to construct a wall around the entire market. Previously, some people used to sleep in the market, but this time around, we have decided not to allow anyone to sleep in the market but rather construct a wall and install CCTV cameras throughout the market to improve overall security and stop people from cooking in the market.

"We have put a lot of measures in place, and we are grateful to our chiefs for the money they have donated. It will go a long way to help us; the GHC200,000 will help us. But we will plead with others to come to our aid because, as it stands now, we need more materials such as ten thousand bags of cement, iron rods, chippings, and labor, so we need a lot of support," he stressed.

Mr. Boakye dispelled claims that the Interim Disaster Management Committee was withholding some donations from benefiting the affected victims. He assured judicious utilization of the resources received, indicating that a thorough account would be rendered at the end of the reconstruction.

Patron of the Ghana Used Clothing Association, Oscar Paul Ankoma (Oscar Park), expressed appreciation to the traditional council while imploring private individuals and organizations to continue supporting the reconstruction of Kantamanto Market and the affected victims.
