Kwahu Easter: GNFS outlines emergency preparedness on Accra–Kumasi Highway

Ghana National Fire Service has advised motorists planning to travel on the Accra-Kumasi Highway during the Easter festivities to exercise caution due to the poor condition of the road.

Addressing the press on April 1, 2026, the Eastern Regional Fire Service Commander, DCFO Timothy Osafo-Affum, pointed out the unusually high traffic expected during the period, noting that the roads will be busier than usual as many travellers head toward the Kwahu Ridge.

"In our region, we know that we have the busiest road in the country, going to Kumasi and up north. But for this particular Easter, because people will also be tripping into Kwahu for the festivities, the road becomes extra busy, busier than usual. We are prepared with our crews on the way," he said.

He said to ensure a rapid response to any emergencies, GNFS has positioned stations along key points of the highway, including Nsawam, Suhum, Bunsu, and Anyinam.

"All of these stations are on alert for any support that anybody would need on the highway. Fortunately, the Chief Fire Officer has advanced some money and equipment to ensure that appliances, which have been down for some time, are brought back into commission. My maintenance officers are putting finishing touches to ensure that all appliances are ready," DCFO Osafo-Affum stated.

He urged motorists to drive cautiously, particularly at night, and to take the necessary precautions to avoid accidents.

"Most parts of the road are not in good shape. We implore all road users to drive safely and take their time. If any misfortune happens, our stations are ready to come to their aid," he stated.

The GNFS also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding travellers during the festivities.
