Kumasi Mayor faces vote of no confidence

Forty-Seven assembly members in the Kumasi Metropolis have written to the Presiding Member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly demanding a meeting to pass a vote of no confidence in Mr Kojo Bonsu, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE).

The assembly gave the Presiding Member a seven-day ultimatum to call the emergency meeting.

The assembly members accused Mr Bonsu of abuse of office, incompetence and lack of respect for laid down rules and regulations governing the assembly.

Addressing a press conference, the assemblyman for Breman-Abusuakruwa, Mr Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, said the MCE is neck deep in dubious deals and corruption, and was engaging in fraudulent practices.

He accused the MCE of misappropriating monies from the Kejetia Terminal and in the award and execution of various contracts, notably the construction of Rotary Park, Kumasi Academy Assembly Hall and others.

He alleged that the MCE is seriously milking the coffers of the assembly dry and it was time they demanded accountability and transparency.

He lamented that various committees of the assembly, particularly the Executive Committee, which is charged with oversight responsibilities, have been rendered redundant.

Mr Boakye alleged that the MCE handpicked persons in his good books to form a management team in place of the Executive Committee.
