Kufuor, Rawlings erred on voters register – Ben Ephson

Pollster Ben Ephson has challenged ex-Presidents Kufuor and J.J Rawlings over their claims that majority of Ghanaians are in support of the compilation of a new voters register.

He indicates that the two former leaders erred in their submissions that sought to claim that a chunk of the Ghanaian people had concerns with the electoral album, and hence a new voters register will clear the controversy and cure any credibility concerns.

“By which yardstick are they making those claims? They cannot say it’s a view of the majority-They have a right on their own to speak their minds but they cannot assert their call for a new voters register largely represents that of the masses; They’re stampeding EC on the voters register,” he told sit-in host Yaa Serwaa Akoto on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.3 FM on Wednesday.

Former President John Kufuor told the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) when they paid a courtesy call on him last week that : “I am with you entirely, completely that the Electoral Commission should not plead excuses like cleaning the voters register.”

“The Electoral Commission is not a power unto itself. I think this should be made clear” he maintained; prevailing on the Commission to listen to the voice of the people from whom the electoral body derives its power.

Ex- President Rawlings on the sidelines also said, if there is some merit contained in the concerns raised by the opposition New Patriotic Party on the register, then the Commission should not drag its feet to collate a new one.

But Ephson, commenting on the development on Kasapa 102.3 FM, held a different view that the fresh compilation of a new register will address the fundamental challenges with the register.

“Let us find ways of cleaning the register, if it doesn’t work, then we go for a new one.”
