Dr Opoku-Ware Ampomah, the Director of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, said the world class Intensive Care Unit (ICU) being constructed at the Burns Centre would be completed in September.
He said due to last year’s floods and fire disaster on June 3, the Government, corporate bodies and the public contributed monies and equipment to the Korle Bu Burns Unit to help improve the level of care.
Dr Ampomah said out of the 16 patients they received after the June 3 disaster, one died due to their inability to access ICU facilities.
He said the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, last year, gave a grant of one million dollars (GHc3.8 million) to facilitate the construction of the Intensive Care Unit to improve service delivery.
Dr Amponsah said the new ICU was expected to be the first in Ghana and West Africa after its completion in September.
“Enterprise Insurance Group donated equipment and other items valued at 30,000 dollars to the Burns Centre and these donations are expected to enhance treatment of survivors of burns at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital when the new Intensive Care Unit is completed,” he said.
Dr Ampomah said the Unit was also considering the training of more experts on plastics and burns in order to bring out a rapid response team who would attend to survivors of burns instantly when called on.
He said a military service is the most appropriate service with the ability of search and rescue and called on them to assist the Fire Service in times of emergencies in order to reduce casualties.
