Kofi Jumah: Commend the committee that investigated GYEEDA

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asokwa in the Ashanti Region, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, has said that the committee set up to investigate the alleged corruption and irregularities at the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Agency, GYEEDA, must be highly commended.

According to him, for a committee to investigate corrupt practices in a ruling government, it is not easy, and therefore the committee, which members also serve as adherents of the ruling government, must be lauded despite the fact that another committee has been set up to review the report.

“Those who were tasked and gathered the courage to investigate the alleged GYEEDA financial malfeasance must be applauded. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah (Sports Minister) and his Co-committee members must be commended because it’s not easy,” he said.

In an attempt to fight corruption in the Mahama-led administration, government set up a 5 member committee to investigate allegations of corruption in GYEEDA, formerly known as National Youth Employment Programme, NYEP.

Members of the committee which includes: Mr. Ferdinand Gunn, the Chairman; Mr. Edward Amuzu Tuinese, Committee Secretary; Mr. Randolf Nsor-Mbala, Mr. Kwami Edem Senanu and Mr. Mike K. Gabbah from the Public Services Commission after a grace period of 2 months, submitted their report to President John Mahama.

But despite the commendation, Mr. Jumah who was speaking on an Accra-based Adom FM, described Ghana as a peril corrupt nation.

“If Ghana’s corruption is to be a vessel, even the sea waters cannot fill all the vessels. Ghana is a very, very, very corrupt country. Though America is also corrupt, Ghana in terms of corruption is far ahead of the Americans. This is very sad for Ghana,” he bemoaned.

He believes the idea of creating jobs for the youth via the GYEEDA initiative is brilliant, but disbursing of funds for the program by individuals and companies should be avoided.

Nonetheless, the former Kumasi Mayor called on the youth to fight for their right and stop this hindrance that might ruin the program.

He further stated that “the GYEEDA report is a scratch on the surface and there is more to it”.

Meanwhile, the president has set up a committee to review the GYEEDA report.
