Kofi Adams: I’m shocked over "doctored" tape claim

Suspended Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams, says he was shocked to the marrow to hear Johnson Asiedu Nketia, NDC General Secretary, claim that the secretly recorded tape in which the National Organizer, Yaw Boateng Gyan, is heard planning to infiltrate the security services...

...with loyalists of the ruling party who will later be given National Security identification cards to enable them move freely and cause trouble in some parts of the country during the national elections has been doctored by the opposition New Patriotic Party.

Mr Adams wants the party’s leadership to be fair in dealing with the issue and hand out the appropriate sanctions.

The NDC National Organiser has been implicated in a secret tape recording promising party footsoldiers soft loans and National Security identification cards to enable them do a yet to-be-instructed job during the December polls.

Yaw Boateng Gyan, who is also a Presidential Staffer, has admitted the voice on the tape is his.

But General Mosquito says in Yaw Boateng Gyan’s case, the tape has been doctored and accuses the NPP of being behind it simply to justify their “all-die-be-die” rallying cry.

It would be recalled that a similar leaked tape of a phone conversation between Kofi Adams, Spokesperson of the Rawlingses and Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, Executive Director of the Danquah Institute, where the former is alleged to have vowed to scuttle then President Mills’ bid for re-election, generated heated debate in the media a couple of months back.

In spite of his repeated explanation that portions of the tape have been doctored, Kofi Adams was asked by the party to step aside to enable the Disciplinary Committee investigate the matter.

Now the NDC is caught in a similar situation and Mr. Adams maintains that the party’s integrity is reliant on the decision it takes on the matter.

Speaking to the issue on PeaceFM’s “Kokrokoo” Morning Show, Kofi Adams expressed surprise at the General Secretary’s comments and wonders why he (Adams) was asked him to go on suspension even before the party got to the bottom of the matter.

“I listened to the General Secretary of the NDC saying how the tape has been doctored by the NPP. I was shocked to have heard this from the General Secretary. Whether the tape was doctored or not; that is not what the people of this country want to hear. It is unfortunate that I am the one saying this: I was also a victim of such leaked tapes. They never believed that a tape can be doctored. Everything then should be accepted hook, line and sinker without any investigation, without any opportunity for me to defend myself…knowing that they didn’t even go through the due process…?...if you believe that doctoring can be done in one, why don’t you believe that doctoring can be done in the other one...," Kofi Adams said.

He continued; “It is up to the institution involved (National Security) to assure people that they will not do anything to destroy the sanctity of elections. If you read the transcripts and excerpts, I can understand that there is reason for worry.”
