The Ministry of Education has approved 25 private Senior High Schools (SHSs) for inclusion in the 2025 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) under the Free SHS policy.
The list was released on Monday, June 16, 2025, marking the first time private SHSs have been integrated into the Free SHS programme, a move aimed at expanding access to quality second-cycle education, particularly in areas where public SHSs are oversubscribed.
The selected schools, classified under Category E, are co-educational day institutions spread across all 16 regions.
They offer a variety of academic programmes, including General Arts, General Science, Business, Technical, Visual Arts, Home Economics, and Agriculture.
According to a statement signed by the Director of the Schools and Instruction Division of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prince Agyemang-Duah, the school selection deadline has been extended to Wednesday, June 25, 2025, to give candidates enough time to consider these new options.
The inclusion of these private schools is part of a pilot phase of the Free SHS policy expansion, implemented in collaboration with the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS).
The initiative specifically targets private institutions in areas where public SHSs face infrastructural challenges and cannot accommodate all qualified students.
“This milestone reflects the ministry’s ongoing commitment to equity and access in education,” the statement noted.
It further added that the pilot initiative will be closely monitored and evaluated for future scaling.
“As part of next steps, selected schools are expected to undergo capacity-building and preparatory assessments to align with Free SHS operational standards. The Ministry, GES, and GNACOPS will coordinate training, oversight, and infrastructure support where necessary,” the statement said.
