The Kimathi and Phyllis Reading Project in collaboration with the Gold Coast Medical Foundation, a US-based group of doctors and medical volunteers, has run a day’s clinic for students, parents and teachers of the Maamobi Prisons School in Accra.

The medical team, which is led by Dr Kwabena Boakye, Co-Founder of the Foundation upon their arrival had for the past two weeks embarked on medical outreaches across the country.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Dr Boakye revealed that, the Foundation was dedicated to the achievement of sustainable adequate health care.

He said this year was the Foundation’s tenth year of providing medical care to the underprivileged and the vulnerable in the country.

Dr Boakye said the Gold Cost Medical Foundation sought to partner with other organizations and individuals to address the several public health issues and construction of healthcare facilities in many parts of the country.

He said the team upon arrival had so far visited and provided medical services to the people of Ho and Dzodze in the Volta Region.

“We also took care of some cerebral palsy children, held a clinic in Ada and some public health lectures at Mensvic Hotel, the Maamobi Prisons School and some part of the Nima community in Accra, Greater Accra Region.

“Onwards we are moving to Cape Coast and Abura, Central Region, Manhyia, Ashanti Region and Kwahu, Eastern Region and Pokuase, Greater Accra Region”.

Dr Boakye said there were several requests for medical suppliers and surgical equipment from some hospitals to the Foundation, adding that, “this year, the Foundation would donate two incubators and other medical suppliers to the Manhyia Hospital, Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

“We would also donate some hospital beds, an ultra-sound scanning machine and other medical suppliers to the Premium Clinic in Cape Coast, Central Region”.

Mrs Phyllis Kuenyehia, the Co-Founder of the Project, said the project took care of students’ welfare needs first, with the believe that before students can focus and read effectively they needed to be physically, psychologically, mentally and emotionally well.

She said in seeking the welfare of the students, the project saw the need to collaborate with the medical Foundation to visit the Maamobi Prisons School to run a day’s clinic for the students, their parents, the teachers and the community.

Mrs Kuenyehia said the kids were excited to talk about how they felt and some medical issues they were struggling with, saying that, children loved being taken care of medically.

They were advised on how they could keep and stay healthy.

She said the project helped students to understand that with great health, the tools to read effectively to acquire knowledge and hard work, the sky was the limit for anything they would love to achieve in the future.

She expressed her outfit appreciation to the Foundation and look forward to more wonderful collaborations in the future.

The Kimathi and Phyllis Reading Project is an initiative aimed at promoting and strengthening child literacy in public schools. It gives students the needed tools to enable them read independently, love reading, think critically about anything they read, learn to take good care of books and apply the knowledge gained from their readings to their everyday lives.

The Gold Coast Medical Foundation is a US based group of doctors and medical volunteers who comes to Ghana every year for a month to run clinics across the country.
