A founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ato Ahwoi, has slammed critics, particularly Paul Adom-Otchere, over comments on the party’s flagbearership race.
According to him, it is too early for people to begin discussions on who would become President John Dramani Mahama’s successor as the party’s leader in the 2028 general elections.

Ahwoi, one of the leading voices of the party, who called into Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Friday, October 3, 2025, argued that the president has only served nine months in office, with three years left for him to govern.
He called on critics to ‘shut up and let President Mahama serve his term’.
“… Mahama has done only nine months of the four years and I don't understand why we are going through this thing of trying to select a flagbearer now. It is not yet time. President Mahama has done only nine months and we have three and half more years to go. So, people should just keep quiet and let him do his governance.
“Paul Adom-Otchere, please keep quiet and shut your mouth and let Mahama serve his term. You never did what you are doing today when Akufo-Addo was in power,” he fumed.
Ato Ahwoi added that the constitution mandates the party in power, thus the NDC, to elect a flagbearer one year before the next general elections.
He intimated that the flagbearer discussions are aimed at creating tensions among the party’s leaders, urging the NDC to ignore such antics.
“I would like him [Paul] to concentrate on his NPP things, while we also concentrate on our NDC things. The NDC is very clear. It says that it will select a flagbearer at least within one year of the election, so, it means we can choose to select our flagbearer sometime in 2028 or 2027,” he stated.
Ahwoi added, “All these things that are going on, causing confusion between Asiedu Nketiah and Julius Debrah and everybody is a typical trademark of Paul Adom-Otchere and I don't think we should give him the chance to do what he's doing on the TV. We have our party, and we are running our party, and we know when we are going to elect our flagbearer.”
