The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has denied reports that its Department of Painting and Sculpture produced the controversial statue of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In a press statement, the school noted that the statue which has generated many backlashes from Ashantis was produced by two lecturers in their individual capacities.

The statue of the Asantehene erected at the Kejetia-Central Market has attracted the fury of residents who are calling for it to be pulled down, saying that the statue looks nothing like their revered king.

Earlier reports stated that the Department of Painting and Sculpture at KNUST was responsible for the statue but the school has dissociated itself and its department from it.

A statement from the University Relations office noted that “KNUST as an institution had nothing to do with the production of the statue” adding that “with our technical expertise, we are however more than willing to assist the public in the production of excellent monuments”.
