KNUST Great Hall Commissioned

Dr Sylvia Boye, chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETfund), has stated that the fund is not meant to take over the development budget of educational institutions but rather to supplement the provision of education in the country. Dr Boye stated this at the commissioning of the refurbished Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi on Friday.

The project was funded under the GETfund at a cost of 3.4 billion cedis.

She said in the coming years, the board would request the various institutions of the universities to submit separate projects for funding.

Dr Boye said KNUST has benefited from the fund to the tune of 7.1 billion cedis and would receive a total of 12 billion cedis in the year 2002 to finance a number of priority projects.

In addition, KNUST would benefit from GETfund hostel projects as part of its investment programme.

Dr Boye said the fund is determined to assist the universities and other tertiary institutions to adequately assume their status as centres of learning and knowledge and would continue to assist the university to rehabilitate its infrastructure.

Professor J.S.K. Ayim, out-going Vice Chancellor of the university, commended the government and the GETfund for providing money for the project and said the refurbishment had brought the Hall back to its status.
